John McAfee, the creator of the McAfee antivirus software, has been found dead in his cell in a jail near Barcelona, a government official told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

McAfee, 75, who was a household name in computer security software, faced securities fraud charges and extradition to the U.S.at the time of his death.

The entrepreneur was arrested last October at Barcelona's worldwide airport.

In a statement obtained by Reuters news agency, the Catalan justice department said "everything points" to suicide.

McAfee remains a person of interest in the 2011 murder of Gregory Faull in Ambergris Caye, Belize District, though he refused to speak to authorities here and fled to Guatemala before being extracted to the U.S. He was later found liable in a wrongful death suit and got involved in multiple legal issues over the years before his untimely passing.

McAfee was charged last October in Tennessee with evading taxes after failing to report income made from promoting cryptocurrencies while he did consulting work, made speaking engagements and sold the rights to his life story for a documentary.

In a hearing held via videolink earlier this month, McAfee argued that the charges against him were politically motivated and said he would spend the rest of his life in prison if he was returned to the U.S.

The Spanish prosecutor, Carlos Bautista, dismissed the claim of political motivations, insisting the Libertarian Party rarely gains more than 1 percent of votes in US elections. McAfee was awaiting extradition in a Spanish prison after being charged with tax evasion in the United States previous year.

McAfee regularly posted updates from his Twitter account, initially saying he was "content" with his situation and had friends in prison, but also describing the conditions of his incarceration.

In Washington, the IRS did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The US also charged McAfee for failing to pay taxes on his cryptocurrency earnings.
