Biden scraps plans to donate Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine overseas

US announces plans to allocate 55 million doses to be shared globally China vaccine doses to ASEAN top 120 million, 4.8 times UN program

"The Biden-Harris administration is committed to working with U.S. vaccine manufacturers to produce more vaccine doses to share with the world", White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said Monday.

World Health Organization senior adviser Dr Bruce Aylward said the Covax programme had delivered 90 million doses to 131 countries.

Where the doses are going: Most will be sent to countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia and Africa.

The White House on Monday laid out a plan to share 55 million US Covid-19 vaccine doses globally, with roughly 75% of the doses allocated to Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia and Africa through the COVAX global vaccine-sharing program.

The Biden-Harris administration will not use its vaccines to secure favours from other countries, it asserted.

The 80 million doses are the first major USA donation internationally, and build on 4.2 million doses "loaned" to Mexico and Canada earlier this year.

When asked about global need for vaccines on Monday, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said: "What we have found to be the biggest challenge is not actually the supply, we have plenty of doses to share with the world, but this is a Herculean logistical challenge".

Those are included in the 55 million remaining shots out of the 80 million doses that US President Joe Biden pledged to allocate by the end of June "in service of ending the pandemic globally".

Uganda, Zimbabwe, Bangladesh and Trinidad and Tobago are just some of the countries that have reported running out of vaccines in recent days.

The remaining one-fourth will be spread among at least two dozen places to help address virus surges, including Colombia, Argentina, Haiti, the Philippines, Vietnam, Iraq, Ukraine, Bosnia, South Africa, the West Bank and Gaza.

The announcement, however, dials back the initial U.S. commitment. "In addition, the United States is committed to expanding local production of vaccines, and through our Quad partnership and the International Development Finance Corporation's support for vaccine manufacturing, more than 1 billion (100 cr) doses will be produced in Africa and India in 2021 and 2022", it said.

Asia (approximately 16 million shots): India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Maldives, Bhutan, Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Laos, Papua New Guinea, Taiwan, Cambodia and the Pacific Islands.

The doses, the White House said, should be prioritized for "those most at risk, such as health care workers, should be prioritized, based on national vaccine plans".
