Nine children and one adult were killed in an accident on Interstate 65 in Butler County, Alabama, on Saturday, according to Butler County Coroner Wayne Garlock.

Five other people were hurt in the crash, but none of their injuries were critical, Butler County Sheriff Danny Bond told Reuters news agency.

The two died as drenching rains pelted much of northern Alabama and Georgia late Saturday. Heavy rains, high winds and flash flooding contributed to the deaths of 12 people in Alabama Saturday, and while the storm has weakened, it is expected to regain strength as it makes its way toward the East Coast.

More than 20 people were rescued by boat in the floods in Northport, Alabama, according to WVUA-TV reports.

A search is also underway for a man in Birmingham, Alabama who may have been swept away in flood waters.

The National Hurricane Center is advising residents in southern Georgia, northern Florida and the Carolinas to prepare for torrential rain and flooding -and possibly tornadoes - through Monday morning.

Pictures from resident Alicia Jossey showed debris from downed trees and other materials strewn across East Brewton, a community of about 2,900 residents near the Florida state line in Escambia County.

Top winds remained near 30 miles per hour (45 kph) National Hurricane Center forecasters predicted Claudette would strengthen back to tropical storm status Monday over eastern North Carolina as it went out to sea in the Atlantic Ocean.

"It was kind of influenced", Jackson said.

The system was located about 25 miles (35 kilometers) west of Atlanta.

The National Hurricane Center declared Claudette organized enough to qualify as a named storm at 4am on Saturday, well after the storm's center of circulation had come ashore southwest of New Orleans. "But these mobile homes are built very close together, so they can cost far more than homes in remote locations". The storm then fell on the Florida Panhandle and a large area of Alabama, quite inland. As of Sunday morning, it had dissipated over Mexico. Its remnants had maximum sustained winds of 25 mph (35 kph), and it was centered about 170 miles (275 kilometers) east of Mazatlan, Mexico.

The storm is packing the potential for isolated tornadoes, flash flooding and gusty winds.

Over the weekend, heavy rainfall of up to 15 inches was expected in the southwestern and western coastal areas of Mexico.
