One person has been killed after a man drove a truck into a crowd of marchers at a Stonewall pride parade in Florida's Wilton Manors.

Wilton Manors City commissioner Chris Caputo tweeted about the incident.

Justin Knight, the president of the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men's Chorus, later issued a statement explaining that the two victims and the drive were all members of the chorus.

"This is a terrorist attack against the LGBT community", he said.

Police have apprehended the driver responsible for the Saturday night crash after attempting to flee, Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis confirmed with WSVN-TV.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by the tragic accident that occurred when the Stonewall Pride Parade was just getting started", Knight said in a statement.

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.), who was present at the parade and sitting in a convertible, was nearly hit by the vehicle.

"Both males were taken to Broward Health Medical Center, where one was pronounced deceased", said Fort Lauderdale Police Department detective Ali Adamson at a Saturday night press conference. Wilton Manors is just north of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

"It was deliberate, it was premeditated, and it was targeted against a specific person".

"I am deeply shaken and devastated that a life was lost and others seriously injured at tonight's @WiltonManorsCty Stonewall #Pride Parade".

"My staff, volunteers and I are thankfully safe", she added. May the memory of the life lost be for a blessing'.

Video from CNN affiliate WPLG showed a man being taken into police custody shortly after the incident, but Adamson would not say whether he was suspected of a crime.

She said: "All of a sudden there was a loud revving of a truck and a crash through a fence. It was definitely an intentional act right across the lanes of traffic", Christina Currie, who was in attendance at the parade, told the South Florida Sun Sentinel.

Wilton Manors police tweeted that the pride march was now cancelled due to a "tragic event", only noting that there was no danger to the public and without providing additional details.

"Though authorities are still gathering information, we know two individuals marching to celebrate inclusion and equality were struck by a vehicle", he posted.

June is Pride Month, which commemorates the 1969 Stonewall riots sparked by repeated police raids on a popular gay bar in NY.
