At least 13 people were injured when gunfire erupted early on Saturday morning along Sixth Street, a popular area filled with bars and restaurants.

.

"It was very hard to contain the scene, it was very hard for EMS to make their way into this crowd", interim Austin Police Chief Joe Chacon said.

Police do not know the shooter's motivation.

Authorities confirmed to Plohetski that investigators were working just after noon Saturday to confirm the identities of the two suspects and arrest them.

It comes as disturbing footage emerged showing crowds of revellers calmly queuing outside a bar while officers were still giving first aid to the injured.

Austin City Council member Mackenzie Kelly took time Saturday morning to thank the swift response from law enforcement.

Two of the injured people were in critical condition but no one has yet died, police said. Medics took four people to the hospital by ambulance, Austin police took six others to the hospital and three were taken by private vehicle, EMS officials said.

Chacon commended officers' quick actions - he said they ran to victims, applied tourniquets and performed CPR - which he said played a role in avoiding fatalities.

The shooter, or shooters, were not immediately apprehended, NBC News reports.

Chacon did not provide more details on suspect descriptions, motives, or whereabouts at a 1pm media briefing.

"I can not say that there is no further public danger at this point because the suspect is not in custody. It appears at this point to be isolated to this one area", Chacon said.

The aggravated assault and homicide police units as well as a gang unit were investigating the incident, while the FBI's terrorism task force had been notified and was also on the scene, Chacon told reporters.

Investigators were reviewing surveillance video and other evidence from the area and have asked anyone with information on the shooting to contact police.

"We are saddened that Austin has joined the far too lengthy list of communities that have experienced mass shootings", Dewitt Peart, president and CEO of the Downtown Austin Alliance in Texas, said in a statement.
