Apple Reveals Unusual Move by Trump's White House

Schiff reacts to DOJ subpoena Shocked... but not surprised Trump administration subpoenaed Apple for lawmakers' data -New York Times

The Justice Department under then-President Trump seized data from the accounts of at least two members of the House Intelligence Committee in 2018 as part of an aggressive crackdown on leaks related to the Russian Federation investigation and other national security matters, according to a committee official and two people familiar with the investigation.

In 2017 and 2018, the records of 12 people with connections to the committee - including a minor - were seized, several people with knowledge of the matter told the Times. One of the people involved was Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), then the top Democrat on the committee and a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump. The subpoena included a gag order, which was renewed three times before it expired this year and Apple notified the customers in May.

The New York Times reported that the DOJ seized from Apple the phone metadata of two Democrats, Reps.

"It looks like they were renewed a number of times and, thankfully, ... it looks like [the Biden administration] did not renew it", Swalwell told CNN during the same segment.

"The review will examine the Department's compliance with applicable DOJ policies and procedures, and whether any such uses, or the investigations, were based upon improper considerations", the inspector general's office said in a statement.

Ranking Senate Judiciary Committee member Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), said Friday he supports the IG's investigation into the matter. So declared then-President Trump in 2018, notes Matt Stieb at NY. Trump called the inquiries a "witch hunt" and regularly criticized Schiff and other Democrats on Twitter.

Schiff, now the panel's chair, confirmed in a statement Thursday evening (local time) that the Justice Department had informed the committee in May that the investigation was closed.

The DOJ's watchdog opened an investigation into the Trump-era seizure of Democrats' phone data.

"The news about the politicization of the Trump Administration Justice Department is harrowing", she said.

"I believe more answers are needed, which is why I believe the Inspector General should investigate this and other cases that suggest the weaponization of law enforcement by a corrupt president", he said.

The House Intelligence Committee was later instrumental in the impeachment inquiry into President Trump's dealings with Russian Federation. The subpoena was part of an effort to find the source of leaks of classified information in the early years of the Trump administration.

The Justice Department officials targeted electronic data not only of the lawmakers, but that of their staff and families, possibly targeting a minor because investigators thought the lawmakers were using their associates' or children's devices to hide contacts with journalists.
