Two people have been arrested after French President Emmanuel Macron was slapped in the face during a visit to the south-east of the country.

Macron's security detail quickly intervened, tackling the man while pulling the president away from the metal barrier.

The man, who took the French President by the arm, shouted: "Down with Macronia" ('A Bas La Macronie') as he delivered the blow. Authorities don arrest two men sake of dis incident, according to French media.

While Macron was ushered from the spot of the slap, he remained near the crowd for a few more seconds and also appeared to talk to someone on the other side of the barrier, Reuters said. While slapping the president, he could be heard shouting "Montjoie Saint Denis", which was the battle cry of the French armies when the country was still a monarchy. Coquerel on Tuesday expressed his solidarity with Macron.

Far-right leader Marine Le Pen also "firmly condemned" what she called "an intolerable physical aggression against the president of the republic".

Visibly fuming, she said later that while Mr Macron is her top political adversary, the assault was "deeply, deeply reprehensible".

Prime Minister Jean Castex said the attack on Macron was an "affront to democracy".

Far-left leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon tweeted his "solidarity with the president" immediately after the slap.

President Macron dey now on one tour of France and bin just visit one hotel school for Tain-l'Hermitage.

Village mayors and lawmakers have been among those targeted by physical assaults, death threats and harassment.

In a rare moment of national unity, even his fiercest critics and political rivals came to his defence on Tuesday. Called "crowd baths" in French, they have always been a staple of French politics and only very rarely produce shows of disrespect for the president.

Macron, like his predecessors, enjoys spending time in meet-and-greets with members of the public.

The French are set to head to the polls for regional elections later this month.
