Prince Harry and Meghan Markle welcomed their second child, a baby girl fondly named "Lilibet". "Thank you for your continued kindness and support during this very special time for our family", the statement said.

A statement from the couple's press secretary said that their second child was born at 11:40 am on Friday.

The Queen is said to have started calling herself Lilibet after she couldn't pronounce "Elizabeth" as a child, and her parents and grandparents began using it affectionately from then on.

Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honour her "beloved late grandmother", the Princess of Wales, the statement said.

The reason why Archie doesn't have a title isn't wholly clear, with Meghan telling Oprah Winfrey in March that her son was denied the title of "prince" by the Palace, a move that she says goes against royal protocol.

"The Queen, the Prince of Wales (Charles) and The Duchess of Cornwall (Camilla) and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (William and Kate Middleton) are delighted with the news", it said.

"It is with great joy that Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, welcome their daughter, Lilibet "Lili" Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, to the world".

"We can confirm that Archie is going to be a big brother", a spokesperson for the couple said in February.

Meghan gave birth to her second child in California, at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, making the newborn the first senior royal baby born in the United States, and the first great-grandchild of the queen to be born outside of the United Kingdom.

"My husband and I are thrilled to soon be welcoming a daughter - it's a feeling of joy we share with millions of other families around the world", the Duchess told the audience at the event, meant to promote Covid-19 vaccine equity and gender equality.

She is the Queen's 11th great-grandchild and is eighth in line to the throne. In addition to Archie, Charles is also grandfather to Prince George, 7, Princess Charlotte, 5, and Prince Louis, 3, the children of Prince William and Duchess Kate.

Harry was recently reunited, albeit briefly, with his family when he attended the funeral of his grandfather Prince Philip in April, though he quickly rushed back to be with his wife.

The baby news was announced on the website for Meghan and Harry's Archewell foundation.

In November, Meghan revealed she had a miscarriage several months earlier, writing about her "almost unbearable grief" in a deeply personal article for the New York Times.

"Amazing. Just grateful", Harry said at the time, describing his own reaction.

One local schoolchild asked the duchess if she'd name the baby Amy if it were a girl, to which she replied, "That's a really pretty name, I like it".

Meghan said it was hard for her to understand why there were concerns within the royal family about her son's skin color. "We've got, you know, the four of us and our two dogs".
