According to news first reported in The Washington Post, the grand jury will meet three days a week for six months and could eventually be asked to consider returning indictments.

Prosecutors are zeroing in on Trump's business dealing before the 2016 election, focusing on whether the Trump Organization manipulated property values to defraud banks and insurance companies.

In response to the development, Trump said it is a continuation of "Witch Hunt" and this is purely political and driven by highly partisan Democrat prosecutors, according to a report by The Hill.

U.S. prosecutors can refer important cases to grand juries. While working on the case, it will also hear other things.

Vance's office declined to comment.

Vance's investigation and a separate inquiry by the NY attorney general's office both appear to be weighing on Trump's mind.

Previous court filings suggested the investigation was sparked by testimony from Trump's former personal lawyer Michael Cohen that the Trump Organization facilitated a hush-money payment to the adult-film actress Stormy Daniels during the 2016 U.S. election - which could also be a violation of state tax laws.

"This is purely political, and an affront to the nearly 75 million voters who supported me in the Presidential Election, and it's being driven by highly partisan Democrat prosecutors", the former president said in a statement.

James' office had been criminally investigating the personal taxes of Allen Weisselberg, the longtime chief financial officer of the Trump Organization, an official close to the investigation said.

Vance refuses to run for reelection and will resign at the end of the year.In other words, the Trump case Likely to be passed on to his successor in any kind of way.

Issues under investigation include Mr Trump's relationship with his lenders, a land donation made to qualify for an income tax deduction, and tax write-offs claimed by the Trump Organisation. An election next month is all but certain to determine who that will be.

She gave investigators a series of tax records and other documents when investigating whether some Trump employees were given off-book compensation such as apartment and school tuition.

He has also said that he is the victim of a plot to stop him from seeking the presidency again.

Allen Weisselberg was subpoenaed in James' civil investigation and testified twice past year.
