'The Sheriff's Office has set up a reunification center for families at the County Building at 70 Hedding St., near 1st Street.

The Mercury News also confirmed that multiple people are dead, including the shooter.

Davis said he would share more information later.

Less than an hour later, the sheriff's office reported the alleged shooter was down. The suspect's cause of death and a possible motive in the attack were still unclear, Deputy Russell Davis told reporters at a brief news conference from the scene.

"Public safety is assured at this point", Davis said.

The shooting was reported around 6:30 a.m. local time at a VTA hub where maintenance is conducted and trains are stored.

The shooting happened "on the VTA light rail yard but it did not happen in the operations control center", VTA Board Chairman Glenn Hendricks said.

Multiple people were killed in a shooting Wednesday at a rail yard in California's Bay Area, police said, the latest instance of deadly gun violence in the United States.

Several people were receiving medical treatment, said San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo.

Hendricks added he was proud of transit workers who stayed on the job and kept moving commuters even in the face of Wednesday's mass shooting. "I could not be more proud of the VTA organization".
