At least 20 people have been killed and dozens injured after a metro overpass collapsed in Mexico City while a train was travelling on it, officials say.

Mexico City mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said on Twitter she was heading to Metro Line 12, the scene of the incident.

Mexico City's civil protection agency tweeted that nearly 70 people were injured in the accident in the south of the capital and were being taken to nearby hospitals.

Dozens of emergency workers were seen trying to rescue victims from the carriages.

Rescue efforts were temporarily suspended until a crane was brought in.

Local channel Milenio TV posted video showing the overpass collapsing on top of cars on a road five meters below.

There were still people trapped inside the train, though "we don't know if they are alive", said Sheinbaum.

"We lost contact with her, at 10:50 p.m". The overpass was about 17 feet above the road in southern Mexico City.

The accident happened on the city's Line 12, the construction of which, according to the Associated Press, has been the subject of numerous complaints and accusations of irregularities.

The collapse occurred on the newest of the Mexico City subway's lines, Line 12, which stretches far into the city's southside.

The line was built when Mexican foreign minister Marcelo Ebrard was mayor of Mexico City.

Social media footage showed panic at the scene of that accident in the city center as lights went out, the ventilation system was interrupted and the station filled with smoke.

A collision in Tacubaya station a year ago left one person dead and 41 injured while another collision in 2015 at the Oceania station injured 12 people.

The latest accident comes at a time when Mexico is struggling to cope with the coronavirus pandemic, which has left more than 217,000 people dead in the country - one of the world's highest tolls.
