When AstraZeneca agreed to work with Oxford University on its COVID-19 vaccine a year ago it "never pretended that we were going to be perfect", Soriot said. But while studies have found that vaccines protect against Covid-19, USA health authorities say that a small percentage of recipients will still contract the potentially deadly disease.

By extending the interval between doses, authorities will be able to evaluate the results of trials on mixing different vaccines before deciding whether those groups will receive a second AstraZeneca shot or another drug, the ministry said.

Earlier this month, Public Health England said the rollout had prevented more than 10,000 deaths of people aged 60 and older by the end of March.

Warren and her colleagues sent letters to pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson and urged them to share their plans of expanding access to coronavirus vaccines across the globe.

AstraZeneca reported revenue of $275 million from deliveries of 68 million doses of the vaccine during the first quarter. The U.S. has also been under mounting pressure to share more of its vaccine supply with the world, as infection rates surge in countries like India and other countries struggle to get enough doses to protect their most vulnerable residents.

Pascal Soriot, who is under intense fire from the European Union over the delivery of AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccines, said the drugmaker he runs had not overpromised on the supply of shots.

Britain's medicine regulator on Thursday said there had been a further 41 reports of rare blood clots after doses of AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine, but that the benefits of the shot continued to outweigh the risks for the majority of people.

A person is considered fully vaccinated more than two weeks after completely the required doses of COVID vaccine, which includes two rounds of either Moderna's or Pfizer's shot, and one dose of Johnson & Johnson's shot, officials said.
