"Any person who enters New Zealand who is ineligible for quarantine-free travel is required to isolate for 14 days and is subject to penalties".

New Zealand and Australia had opened their quarantine-free travel bubble on April 18, nearly 400 days after they closed their borders due to the pandemic.

The lockdown will also force the cancellation of events on Sunday for Anzac Day, the annual day of remembrance for Australian and New Zealand soldiers lost in war.

New Zealand on Friday paused its newly opened travel bubble with Australia, the government in Wellington said, after a Covid-19 outbreak in its larger neighbour.

"The advice is that the Perth cluster appears to be contained and the post-lockdown transition response measures the Western Australia Government introduced will provide an additional layer of assurance".

Immigration NZ alerted the Ministry of Health to a person who travelled from Perth to Auckland, via Sydney, on April 26, during the Perth/Peel lockdown period.

Australian authorities ordered a snap, three-day lockdown in the western city of Perth Friday after the coronavirus escaped from a quarantine hotel housing infected global travellers.

Western Australia Premier Mark McGowan said the man passed the virus on to a friend he was staying with after checking out of the hotel, and is believed to have been unknowingly infectious in the Perth community for five days.

A man in his 50s, who recently left hotel quarantine, flew into Melbourne from Perth on Wednesday and tested positive for the coronavirus earlier on Friday.

Shortly after the lockdown was announced, New Zealand immediately suspended quarantine-free travel to and from Perth.

"Until then, travel between New Zealand and Western Australia will remain paused", he said at the time.

After the travel bubble was announced, a spokesman for Australian flag carrier Qantas said tickets to New Zealand were "selling like hot cakes" with a strong "load" to Queenstown, which is billed as the country's "Adventure capital".

"The risk to the public has been assessed again to be very low".

It comes after Western Australia recorded two new cases of community transmission of coronavirus on Friday, including a Victorian man who tested positive after completing hotel quarantine in Perth.

The results of the two casual contacts in New Zealand that could be potentially linked to the Western Australian cases were expected today.
