An Indonesian navy submarine has gone missing in waters north of the island of Bali, with 53 people on board.

The Swift Rescue will join other Indonesian navy ships already searching for the submarine, with ship tracking websites showing at least two Indonesian corvettes already at the vessel's last known location, which is reportedly between 700 to 800 meters (2,300 to 2,625 feet) deep.

The navy said an electrical failure may have occurred during the dive, causing the submarine to lose control and become unable to undertake emergency procedures that would have allowed it to resurface.

Military chief Hadi Tjahjanto on Wednesday said the KRI Nanggala 402 was participating in a training exercise when it missed a scheduled reporting call.

Several countries, including Australia, India and Singapore have offered to provide assistance.

He said contact with the vessel was lost at 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday. It said a helicopter later spotted an oil slick near the dive's starting position.

Indonesian authorities immediately requested assistance from Singapore and Australia.

Commander Marshal Tjahjanto will hold a media briefing to share further information about the search on Thursday from Bali, a spokesman said. 'We know the area but it's quite deep'.

The KRI Nanggala-402 submarine stopped responding in the early morning defense officials said.

Indonesia operates a fleet of five military submarines, including two built in Germany and three newer South Korean-built boats, according to Reuters.

Indonesia in the past operated a fleet of 12 submarines bought from the Soviet Union to patrol the waters of its sprawling archipelago.

Indonesia has been seeking to modernize its defense capabilities but some of its equipment is old and there have been deadly accidents in recent years.
