15-year-old girl shot dead by police in Columbus, Ohio
21 April, 2021, 19:25
The shooting in a neighbourhood on the city's south-east side happened to coincide with announcement of the guilty verdict by a Minneapolis jury against a former police officer charged with murdering George Floyd by kneeling on his neck during an arrest a year ago.
The 10-second clip begins with the officer getting out of his vehicle at a house where police had been dispatched after someone called 911 saying they were being physically threatened, Interim Police Chief Michael Woodssaid at the news conference. Police showed bodycam footage at a news conference of the officer shooting the girl, who was Black, as she appeared to attempt to stab two people with a knife. "Get down!" Bryant then appears to lunge toward a second girl with the knife, as the officer continued to yell "Get Down!"
Upon arrival, police allegedly saw Ma'Khia with a knife in her hand and reportedly shot her four times in the chest.
The police chief said the department was releasing video to the public within hours of the incident in the interest of "transparency".
The girl's death sparked protests in Ohio's largest city and several protesters assembled later in the day near the shooting site.
"It's a disgusting, heartbreaking situation", Mayor Andrew J. Ginther said.
He said, "We know based on this footage, the officer took action to protect another young girl in our community". The officer shouts several times to get down. "She could be my grandchild", said Ned Pettus, the Columbus director of public safety. "She promoted peace. That is something that I want to always be remembered", Bryant told TV station WBNS. "She was 15 years old".
Investigators will determine whether the killing complies with state law that says "deadly force can be used to protect yourself or the protection of a third person", Interim Police Chief Michael Woods said at a news conference late Tuesday. She did not elaborate on the nature of the threat.
"This afternoon a young woman tragically lost her life".
Family members have identified the girl killed in the shooting as Makiyah Bryant, aged 16. "They deserve answers. but fast, quick answers can not come at the cost of accurate answers".
Crowds have gathered throughout the night at both the scene of the incident and in the city centre.
Woods said the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) had opened an inquiry into the case.
"At the conclusion of that investigation, the divisional police will conduct an administrative review of the actions of this officer and all officers at the scene". They will also release other details of the shooting and the officers involved, he said. But things changed quickly, she said.
The police shooting in his neighborhood "just brings it home a little closer", he said, and reaffirms his decision to tell his 18-year-old son - who, like Graham, is Black - never to call the police. "Because as you're getting one phone call that he was guilty, I'm getting the next phone call that this is happening in my neighbourhood".
The case appears to be unrelated to the travel bubble though and flights with Australia have not been suspended. Victoria recorded zero new local cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, with four new cases in hotel quarantine.
