Flags across Minnesota are at half-staff in honor of former Vice President Walter Mondale, who died Monday at the age of 93.

Mondale, whose nickname was Fritz, had a decades-long political career and was committed to his role of vice president when he served alongside former President Jimmy Carter.

Mondale won the Democratic presidential nomination himself in 1984, and made history by naming a woman, US Rep. Geraldine A. Ferraro of NY, as his running mate before ultimately falling short to Reagan.

Mondale is probably best remembered for losing one of the most uneven presidential elections in recent history, to a Ronald Reagan who was at the height of his popularity.

He served as United States ambassador to Japan from 1993 to 1996 in the administration of then president Bill Clinton, and worked to reduce the USA trade deficit with Japan.

The death of Mondale, known as a champion of liberal politics, was announced by a family friend and spokeswoman Kathy Tunheim but no specific cause was provided, according to The Washington Post. "It was Walter Mondale who defined the vice presidency as a full partnership, and helped provide a model for my service", Biden said. "There was a difference after the inauguration - a letting go", Cosgrove said. "Hillary and I loved him and will miss him very much". Tina Smith of Minnesota said in a statement.

Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa called Mondale a great senator who "spoke the values of Minnesota & loved his state like I do Iowa".
