"They're murdering Alexey Navalny - in a terrifying way right before our eyes", said Volkov.

'Our patient could die at any moment, ' Ashikhmin warned. Moscow insists he is being given adequate care.

"Of course, he will not be allowed to die in prison, but I can say that Mr Navalny, he behaves like a hooligan", says ambassador Andrei Kelin.

Their comments came a day after U.S. President Joe Biden said Navalny's plight was "totally, totally unfair, totally inappropriate".

Talking to German reporters, Maas added that European Union foreign ministers will discuss Navalny's situation at the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels on Monday, while Le Drian has warned that the European Union might impose additional sanctions to the already existing package.

"The package of sanctions is already significant, but there may be others".

Navalny was arrested in January on his return to Russian Federation after recovering from a near-fatal poisoning he says was orchestrated by Moscow.

Russian Federation jailed Navalny for two and a half years in February for parole violations he said were fabricated.

On March 15 he uploaded his first Instagram post from inside jail, likening conditions to "a concentration camp" alongside an image of him with a shaved head.

Alexei Navalny's doctors say he could be close to death unless he gets medical treatment.

"Today, when a murder is being broadcast "live on air" to the whole world and the whole world sees it", wrote Volna on Facebook, "It's not a question of political preferences, it's a question of a doctor's duty". Even I have such a right and I'm innocent.

The UK was also deeply concerned by reports of the unacceptable treatment of Mr Navalny and the continued deterioration of his health, the foreign ministry said.

Navalny's team has called for a mass protest across Russian Federation next week, saying it could be "modern Russia's biggest protest".

The Wednesday protests have been called for symbolically resonant locations - Manezh Square in Moscow, just outside the Kremlin walls, and St. Petersburg's sprawling Palace Square.

"Things are developing too quickly and too badly", his allies wrote in a statement on Navalny's website, announcing their plans for nationwide street demonstrations that they portrayed as a bid to win him life-saving medical care and as a protest over a crackdown on his supporters.

Concerns over Navalny's health have mounted against the background of a spike in tensions between Moscow and the West over a litany of issues, including Russia's troop build-up on Ukraine's border, interference in United States elections and other perceived hostile activities.

Russian Federation insists that troops are being stationed along the border in response to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation activities, but the alliance denies any build-up of its own and has called on Putin to "de-escalate" the situation.

Others have suggested that Putin is responding to pressures within Russian Federation itself, including growing political opposition from Navalny and those linked to him.
