As reported by Sky Sports, Chelsea are among the six English teams involved in plans for the potential new competition, as well as Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool.

Commenting on the Super League, Sky News' City editor Mark Kleinman said: "My understanding is that 12 clubs from across Europe including the six biggest English clubs have now signed up to this new format".

"It is pure greed".

Reaction from European football chiefs to the proposal, which would upend decades of football governance in Europe and wrest control of the game away from the governing body, was also swift and vehement. There's 100 years of history in this country from fans that have lived and loved these clubs, and they need protecting. Known as the "Swiss Model", the proposed new Champions League format would dissolve the current eight-group format into one large group, weighted by seeding, where each team would play 10 group games.

The timing is interesting because on Monday UEFA was due to confirm changes to the format of the Champions League.

Italy's Serie A called an emergency board meeting on Sunday to discuss a newspaper report saying broadcaster DAZN is involved in new plans for a breakaway European Super League, a league source told Reuters.

An August start with clubs participating in two groups of ten, playing home and away fixtures, with the top three in each group automatically qualifying for the quarter finals.

"Manchester United and the rest of the big six clubs who have signed up for it should be ashamed of themselves". "Deduct points off them all - to do it during a season, it's a joke". "That's the way football has become now and it's an absolute disgrace if I'm honest".

"This closed-shop competition will be the final nail in the coffin of European football, forsaking everything that has made it so popular and successful - sporting merit, promotion and relegation, qualification to UEFA competition via domestic success, and financial solidarity".

"It is illegitimate, irresponsible and anti-competitive by design", said Fans Europe, a football supporters' network.

The plans have been slammed by UEFA, the Football Association and the Premier League, while there are doubts over whether any player turning out in the breakaway league would be able to compete for their country in internationals. The only ones who stand to gain are hedge funds, oligarchs and a handful of already wealthy clubs, many of which perform poorly in their own domestic leagues, despite their inbuilt advantage.

The new annual tournament will provide significantly greater economic growth and support for European football via a long-term commitment to uncapped solidarity payments which will grow in line with league revenues.

UEFA and English, Spanish and Italian football authorities announced on Sunday that any clubs who take part in a so-called European Super League would be banned from all other domestic and continental competitions.

Ligue 1 clubs notably refused to agree to the plans, earning praise, along with the Bundesliga, for their stance by UEFA.
