More than 200 firefighters in Cape Town, South Africa were deployed to battle a wildfire raging on the slopes of Table Mountain on Sunday.

The blaze spread quickly after breaking out on Sunday morning near a memorial to politician Cecil Rhodes. A section of the tea room at Rhodes Memorial has been destroyed and people are urged not to enter the area.

Four helicopters are water-bombing the flames.

A first alert went up shortly before 9 am (0700 GMT), the city said. The flames spread quickly because of the low humidity and dry bush.

"After the initial investigation, it is surmised that the origin of the fire is from a vacated vagrant fire", it said.

One firefighter was injured and being treated at a hospital, according to the Cape Town fire and rescue department.

Built in 1796 Mostert's Mill was the oldest surviving and only complete windmill in South Africa. Other buildings were also affected.

Cape Town Traffic Services spokesperson Maxine Bezuidenhout says the M3 inbound between Rhodes Drive and Union Avenue is closed to traffic as well as access roads from Woolsack Drive and Princess Ann Ave onto the M3.

'At this stage, there's no cause to evacuate, but we ask that residents adhere to the following: close all windows to prevent draft and reduce heat, damp down your garden using a hose or irrigation system, ' Powell said.

Earlier SANParks Table Mountain National Park requested hikers to immediately evacuate the area.
