At least three people died following a shooting in Austin, Texas, on Sunday, said officials, while police said a suspect is still at large.

It is unknown if Broderick fled on foot or in a vehicle, and authorities are concerned that he could be hiding or take a hostage, according to Austin Police Interim Chief Joseph Chacon.

Following the shooting, there was a huge police presence on the scene near the junction Great Hills Trail and Rain Creek Parkway in the Arboretum area of the city.

The shooting appears to be "a domestic situation that is isolated", a tweet from Austin police said.

Broderick had a pistol in his waistband, Phipps said.

This photo provided by the Austin Police Department shows Stephen Broderick, 41. "At this point, we do not think this individual is out there targeting random people to shoot".

According to the Austin American-Statesman, Broderick resigned from the Travis County Sheriff's office previous year after he was arrested on a charge of sexual assault of a minor.

Travis County District Attorney Jose Garza said in a statement that Broderick had been arrested for sexual assault of a child last June and was released on $50,000 bond. He resigned after he was arrested a year ago on a sexual assault charge.

Stedman said she did not know the exact location where the three people were killed but that emergency personnel responded to an area that included a strip mall, several retail stores with a large apartment complex behind it. Police said a child is safe and with authorities.

Broderick's wife filed for divorce and a protective order after his arrest, the Statesman first reported, citing court documents.
