Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov explained earlier this week that the Pfizer vaccine's price was rising as sales were being negotiated, costing as much as 19.50 euros, up from 12 euros.

Bourla added that the EU's rollout - which has faced criticism for lagging behind countries like the United Kingdom and the United States - shouldn't be compared to quicker vaccination campaigns, saying that "the grass always looks greener in your neighbor's garden".

Even if that protection lasts far longer than six months, experts have said that rapidly spreading variants of the coronavirus and others that may emerge could lead to the need for regular booster shots similar to annual flu shots.

Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said people who've gotten both doses would likely need a third shot within 12 months and might need an annual shot thereafter.

"It is extremely important to suppress the pool of people that can be susceptible to the virus", he said.

Last month, the National Institutes of Health began testing several versions of boosters from Moderna that could potentially be used to combat variants of COVID-19, including the South African strain that has flummoxed researchers and healthcare professionals since it started spreading.

Speaking to CNBC in an interview aired on Thursday, he said: We need to see what would be the sequence, and for how often we need to do that, that remains to be seen.

Pfizer: Annual Covid-19 booster shots may become new normal

While a third booster shot against the virus is not yet required, Moderna has announced it will be ready soon.

Pfizer was first to market in the US with its BioNTech-partnered COVID-19 vaccine, and by and large, it's avoided the safety and supply concerns plaguing some of its pandemic peers.

In its latest report, Pfizer said its vaccine is effective at least six months after it's administered.

Among the most vulnerable population - residents 65 years and older - more than 70% have gotten a first dose, and more than 61% are fully vaccinated.

Johnson & Johnson CEO Alex Gorsky told CNBC in February that people may need to get vaccinated against COVID-19 annually, just like seasonal flu shots.

"We don't know everything at this moment", he told the House Coronavirus Crisis Subcommittee. "We are studying the durability of the antibody response".

"I think for planning purposes, planning purposes only, I think we should expect that we may have to boost". But the concern is that in some cases, they are occurring in people infected by more contagious virus variants.
