Delhi recorded 17,282 fresh cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, the highest single-day surge in the national capital since the onset of the pandemic, while over 100 fatalities were reported, according to data shared by the health department.

India continues to lead the world in terms of average daily cases detected.

This is the the eighth record daily increase in the last nine days.

The publication claims that a total of 187 bodies were cremated at the two sites between Thursday and Sunday, despite the official death toll for the region being just five.

It comes as hundreds of people tested positive at the site of the world's biggest religious festival.

Television broadcast images of a long queue of ambulances carrying virus sufferers waiting to be admitted to a city hospital that can accommodate more than 1,000.

Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala cumulatively account for 67.16 per cent of country's total active cases whereas Maharashtra alone accounts for 43.54 per cent of the total active caseload of the country.

India said on Thursday regulators would decide on emergency-use applications for foreign COVID-19 vaccines within three working days.

The number of active cases stands at 14,71,877.

On Monday and Tuesday, a huge crowd of worshippers packed the river's banks to take a dip in the waters as part of a bathing ritual.

"They believe that Maa [mother] Ganga will save them from this pandemic".

"Along with the ramped up production of the oxygen manufacturing units and the surplus stocks available, the present availability of oxygen is sufficient", the health ministry said in a statement on Thursday.
