The FedEx facility involved is near Indianapolis International Airport, but it is not part of the FedEx hub at the airport.

There were several people injured in the shooting.

"We have located eight people with gunshot wounds who were pronounced deceased at the scene".

"It is very heartbreaking and, you know, in the Indianapolis Metro Police Department, the officers responded, they came in, they went in and they did their job", Cook said.

"Thank God for being here because I thought I was going to get shot", Miller told the station.

At first Jeremiah Miller and Timothy Boillat thought the sound was from a auto, but after hearing more, Miller stood up and saw a man with a weapon, he told the station.

A FedEx statement said the company was aware of the shooting and co-operating with the authorities.

A witness who said he works at the facility told WISH-TV media outlet that he saw a man with a gun after hearing several gunshots.

US President Joe Biden recently announced six new measures he said would help curb gun violence, a phenomenon he described as "an worldwide embarrassment".

On March 22, 10 people were killed in a shooting at a grocery store in Boulder, Colorado. In early April, five people, including two children, were killed by a neighbour, who was later identified as a former professional football player.

Ms Cook confirmed eight people had died plus the gunman, while many others were injured.

For decades, U.S. lawmakers have been split on the politically fraught issue.

Last week, President Joe Biden announced his first steps since taking office to tighten gun controls following a series of mass shootings.

The moves were immediately attacked by Republicans, with the party's senior leader in the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, warning of "unconstitutional overreach".
