Despite the local health unit giving the okay for students in the district to return to the classroom after the April break, the provincial government is going to be keeping them at home for virtual learning.

Spring break began Monday after the province postponed it in March to discourage travel during the pandemic.

"We are seeing a rapidly deteriorating situation with a record number of COVID cases and hospital admissions threatening to overwhelm our health care system", a statement form Ontario Premier Ford reads.

Ontario is ramping up vaccine rollout in highly impacted communities as part of the province's Phase Two COVID-19 vaccine distribution plan.

Before and after school programs will also be shuttered.

Students who attend special education classes, or who need support that can't be provided online, will continue to learn in-person, according to the board, which said a start date will be shared with families based on staffing and scheduling.

All schools will switch to remote learning on April 19, the Ford government announced on Monday afternoon, saying they are doing so in response to the rapid increase in COVID-19 cases, as well as the spike in hospitalizations.

The province said Tuesday that mobile sites and pop-up clinics, largely organized by community groups, will target residents aged 18 and older in "high risk" neighbourhoods within certain postal codes.

"As we all know, it would be great to have the kids back in school", he said. Private schools operating in-person this week are to transition to remote learning by April. 15, 2021. "Data will be assessed on an ongoing basis and health officials will be consulted to determine when it will be safe to resume in-person learning", reads the announcement.

Horwath acknowledged that some type of third wave was inevitable for Ontario but said the extent of it was "very much avoidable".

"This was not a decision we made lightly, as we know how critical schools are to Ontario students".

Lecce adds that they will make the move back to in-person learning as soon as it's safe to do so.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Williams said Ontario's surge in COVID-19 cases is being impacted by gatherings on Easter weekend.

The province reported 4,401 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday - more than 1,280 in Toronto - and 15 new deaths due to the virus. If one of Ontario's 325 critically-ill COVID-19 patients arrives here, this is what their experience could look like.
