Crowds of mourners and protesters gathered Sunday in a Minnesota city where the family of a 20-year-old man say he was shot by police before getting back into his auto and driving away, then crashing several blocks away. The incident immediately landed in a cultural fissure.

The family of Daunte Wright, 20, said he was pulled over for displaying an air freshener.

The fatal incident comes as the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd enters its third week in a courthouse just 10 miles away.

George Floyd's death sparked waves of protests around the city, many peaceful but some violent with hundreds of buildings damaged.

Demonstrators gathered shortly after the shooting and crash, with some jumping on top of police cars and confronting officers.

After determining the driver had an outstanding warrant, police tried to arrest the driver.

The family of Daunte Wright, 20, told a crowd that he was shot by police Sunday before getting back into his auto and driving away, then crashing the vehicle several blocks away. Police said the vehicle traveled several blocks before striking another vehicle. The driver drove several blocks before striking another vehicle to die at the scene. The autopsy and formal identification are pending. A female passenger was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The police department added that body and dash cameras were switched on during the incident and that an independent investigation into the case has been opened.

By Sunday night, a couple hundred people had gathered near the scene.

While the police have not yet named the victim, the family of Daunte Wright, 20, say that he was shot on Sunday afternoon after being stopped for a traffic violation.

By late Sunday, Brooklyn Center police had fired gas into the crowd of protesters who had gathered outside the police station.

Protests flared near Brooklyn Center hours after the shooting, with riot police out in force.

Katie Wright, Daunte's mother, huddled with loved ones near the scene and pleaded for her son's body to be removed from the street, the Star Tribune reported.

Relatives of Daunte Wright, 20, who is Black, told a tense crowd gathered at the scene in the northern Minneapolis suburb that Wright drove for a short distance after he was shot, crashed his vehicle, and died at the scene.

A passenger who got out of the vehicle was also covered in blood, Ms Hanson said.

A woman who lives near the crash scene, Carolyn Hanson, said she saw law enforcement officers pull a man out of a vehicle and perform CPR.

According to the statement, Wright was outside his auto and then "re-entered the vehicle" when an officer shot him.

According to MPR News, Duante Wright's mother said she had just bought him a vehicle and that he was on his way to a auto wash at the time of the shooting.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said he was "closely monitoring the situation" and praying for Mr Wright's family.

A representative with the Brooklyn Center Police Department made an announcement over the speaker announcing unlawful assembly, and gave the group a ten minute warning to disperse at 9:30 p.m. local time.
