Over seven decades, Prince Philip navigated the highs and lows of a Royal Family permanently in the public eye.

"It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh", a royal communications statement read.

On Instagram there is no such change, but all the accounts have shared the royal family's post, informing the public of Prince Philip's death. Further announcements will be made in due course. While the country is expected to go into a period of 10 days of mourning, the royal household will do so for 30 days, and guardsmen will be seen with black armbands on their tunics during that period. Instead, all that's visible is a holding page with the same image of the Duke of Edinburgh - this time in colour - and the words: 'The Duke of Edinburgh1921 - 2021'.

The husband of Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip of 74 years, Prince Philip was by Her Majesty's side to guide the United Kingdom through almost seven decades following The Queen's coronation in 1952.

Philip started corresponding with his future wife, then just a princess, after the two met in 1939 when he was at the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth.

"However, he will be remembered most of all for his extraordinary commitment and devotion to The Queen". He helped the family cope with hard times in the 1990s, including the divorces of Prince Charles and Diana, and Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson. He once said his best speech was in 1956, when he opened the Summer Olympics with eight words: "I declare open the Olympic games of Melbourne".

Former prime minister Tony Blair said the Queen's late husband was "a man of foresight, determination and courage", paying tribute to his environmental and charity work.

The monarch, 94, will refrain from carrying out any royal duties during this time.

"Farewell Prince Philip - always charming to this republican", he tweeted. For example, he was very pro having the cameras in for Elizabeth the Second's coronation in 1953.

The couple sired four children: Charles, Prince of Wales; Anne, Princess Royal; Prince Andrew, Duke of York; and Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex.

People placed flowers outside the palace with messages of condolence.
