The province has not closed schools, but local public health chiefs in Toronto, Peel and Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph ordered all schools closed until at least April 19.

Bird acknowledged that there are some outbreaks at Toronto schools, including 22 that were closed on Monday, and that closing all schools is the best move right now. But I think everyone did know this conversation seemed to be out there for the past week or so.

The health coalition says they understand that schools and learning environments must be safe, at all times, calling on the Ford government to further enhance the safety inside classrooms to better protect students and staff.

"You can't just make a decision and hope it's going to stick for two weeks".

York, Durham and Halton regions said Tuesday that they do not plan to follow suit in shutting down schools for the time being.

In a Twitter thread, Etches said she is "in the process of reviewing the COVID data in schools to advise on an approach to take for schools in Ottawa".

Next week is spring break for most elementary and secondary students across the province.

Last month's initial booking rollout proved to be chaotic, with the Telus call centres receiving 1.7 million calls within three hours of phone lines opening up on March 8.

Since we last reported, we have had 579 new cases of COVID-19 in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 986 new cases in the Fraser Health region, 100 in the Island Health region, 129 in the Interior Health region, 95 in the Northern Health region and no new cases of people who reside outside of Canada. There are now 1,062 schools with at least one case of the virus and 83 schools are now closed due to an outbreak.

Ontario's Premier says added restrictions are on the horizon, perhaps as early as Wednesday, admitting that the recently imposed "emergency brake" may not be enough to contain the third wave.

Teachers have also argued that they should be prioritized for vaccinations if they are required to teach in the classroom.

Gatherings are a major source of transmission in the province, she said.

Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation- Toronto President Leslie Wolfe told CP24 Tuesday that she welcomes the move but it should have happened sooner.

Lab studies suggest vaccines are less effective against this variant, she said. It's not clear if the further measures will affect the whole province.

There is increasing pressure on provinces to get vaccines to younger, essential workers faster, in industries where it's known the virus is spreading and workers can't stay home.

To date, over 770,000 eligible British Columbians have received their first dose of vaccine, and more than 87,000 have received their second dose.

The cumulative number of school-related cases in Ontario stands at 13,498 according to the latest figures available from the province.
