They said the suspect was "down".

Frederick Police Chief Jason Lando said officers found two men with gunshot wounds.

Fort Detrick is located approximately 50 minutes from Washington, D.C. O'Connor noted that various defense contractors are based near Fort Detrick and it wouldn't be unusual for a member of the military to be off base and working with a private firm that does business with the USA government. Gen. Michael J. Talley.

Another neighbor who would only identify herself by her first name, Rachel, said she saw police escort Woldesenbet's wife and two young children from the apartment building Tuesday afternoon. "The gunman was pronounced dead at the scene".

"There were no other injuries on Fort Detrick", Talley said.

Fort Detrick is home to the military's flagship biological defense laboratory and several federal civilian biodefense labs.

Frederick police will continue to investigate the scene in the city, and Federal Bureau of Investigation agents will investigate the scene on the Army base, officials said.

Officials later identified the gunman as 38-year-old U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsman, Fantahun Girma Woldesenbet, of Frederick. He obtained the rank of E-4 in June 2017 while serving with Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command in Bremerton, Wash.

Woldesenbet lived in Frederick, Lando said.

In a press conference Tuesday, officials with the Frederick Police Department confirmed that two adult male victims were injured in a shooting at the Riverside Technology Park in Frederick.

Right now investigators are unsure of a motive or if the victims were targeted. He could not say whether the shooting was inside or outside. A behavioral health "sprint team" traveled to the base from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., to provide support, Talley said.
