Waterloo Region's top doc 'not planning' to close in-person learning at schools

Dr. Lawrence Loh, the region's medical officer of health, has ordered schools in Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga to move classes online.
Peel Region schools will be closed as of Tuesday, the Sun has learned. "With increasing case counts and the presence of variants of concern, we need to break chains of transmission and keep our schools safe".
Schools should be the last to close and the first to open in a pandemic situation, Adalsteinn (Steini) Brown, co-chair of the Ontario COVID-19 Science Advisory Table, told reporters last week. But that may be extended if COVID-19 indicators don't improve, the regional health authority said.
A spokesperson for Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health said school closures are "an area of active discussion".
"Stronger public health measures are required to reverse the surge of infection that the province now faces". Further decisions to extend the order will be made, as required.
Toronto Public Health said it appreciates that this decision places additional burden on many families but "health and safety of students and staff remains a priority". "This action is being taken in an effort to keep our communities safe and prevent further spread of COVID-19".
Spring break is still expected to go ahead across Ontario on April 12.
