European Union could achieve Covid-19 immunity by mid-July, says vaccine chief

BREAKING NEWS European Medicines Agency Confirms blood clot link with Astra Zeneca Covid vaccine Covid 19 coronavirus: AstraZeneca vaccine and blood clots link 'clear', says top health official

The EU's drug regulator said Tuesday it is still deciding whether the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine causes blood clots, after a top official said there was a clear link.

"In my opinion we can now say it, it is clear that there is an association with the vaccine. Then 120 million in the summer, and we will reach a rate of 200 million from September", he said.

However, the EMA then conducted an investigation into the vaccine, and found that the benefits outweigh the risks and it should continue to be used.

Authorities had pledged to administer at least 4 million first doses of the vaccine by end-March, but could only vaccinate 670,000 after the European Union blocked AstraZeneca vaccine exports to Australia in the wake of the drugmaker's failure to meet its shipment pledge to the bloc.

Breton, the European Union commissioner in charge of the vaccine task force, had already suggested at the end of March that herd immunity would be possible in the European Union by July 14th, as incoming jabs are expected to speed up the continent's sluggish vaccine rollout.

If a restriction is confirmed, the rollout of the vaccination programme could be slowed significantly, with AstraZeneca jabs more than a fifth of the UK's vaccine haul.

Australia began vaccinations much later than some other countries due to low case numbers, recording just under 29,400 COVID-19 cases and 909 deaths since the pandemic began.

"For the time being, Finland will follow the precautionary recommendation that the use of AstraZeneca be restricted to people aged 65 and over, because no such rare side effects have been observed in that age group", Nohynek said.

The halt comes after a number of people under 60 died from a rare brain blood clot after being injected with the vaccine. Should the United Kingdom government restrict access to AstraZeneca, the speed of their vaccine rollout could be greatly slowed down.

The UK has secured a total of 457 million Covid vaccine doses, of which 100 million are from AstraZeneca.

The UK's health agency has identified 30 cases of rare blood clot events out of 18.1 million doses of the jab administered up to and including 24 March.

After several countries suspended the use of the jab - including Italy - the EMA declared that the benefits outweigh the risks and it should remain in use.
