A man shot and injured two people at a business in the Maryland city of Frederick on Tuesday morning before driving to the United States military's nearby Fort Detrick, where personnel there shot and killed him, police said.

Police in Frederick, Maryland say there are now two victims and one suspect is down in an active shooter situation. Police said that there were two victims and that "one suspect is down". He added that it was not clear yet who killed the suspect.

"The gunman was neutralized, and medical lifesaving procedures were initiated", they said.

The shooter injured two men. The Navy did not release further details. The shooter, a Navy Hospital Corpsman, is deceased.

"As you can imagine, this is a very active scene right now", Frederick Police Chief Jason Lando told reporters on Tuesday morning. People fled from the business.

Jeremy Mutschler, director of marketing for Nicolock Paving Stones, said that his understanding is that the shooting was near the company's Frederick location but not at the business itself. It was unclear whether the shooting occurred inside or outside a business at the facility.

Special agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives along with a K-9 team are being sent to the scene, the agency said.

Authorities in Frederick, Maryland, 45 miles (72 km) northwest of Washington, were still trying to piece together the events shortly after they unfolded with an emergency call at 8:20 AM EDT (1220 GMT).
