Jordan arrests ex-palace aide, others for ‘security’ reasons

Hamzah has said all his staff members have been arrested, and that he and his family have been placed in a palace outside the capital Amman.
Jordanian state media confirmed that a number of officials were detained for security reasons, but denied reports that Prince Hamzah was among them.
According to news agency "Ammon", which is close to the Jordanian security services, the man's name is Roy Shaposhnik and he is allegedly a former Mossad officer.
Abdullah has ruled Jordan since the 1999 death of his father, King Hussein, who ruled the country for close to a half-century.

In a statement published by the state news agency, the military said the warning to Prince Hamzah was part of a broader, ongoing security investigation in which a former minister, a junior member of the royal family and unnamed others were detained.
"The investigations found foreign interference and contacts including contacts with foreign parties around the best timing to begin taking steps to undermine the security of our Jordan", Safadi said.
"Jordan's safety and stability is the priority".
"This sedition was nipped in the bud", Safadi said.
Hamzah is the eldest son of late King Hussein and his American wife Queen Noor.
A Jordanian analyst, who declined to be named, said Hamzah had recently "stepped up his criticism of what he described as corruption within the government in front of his circle of friends". The armed forces only noted that the prince was told to cease "movements and activities that are used to target" the security and stability of Jordan. "King Abdullah is a key partner of the United States, and he has our full support".
Israel's Defence Minister Benny Gantz said "Jordan is a neighbour and strategic ally with whom we have peaceful relations. We need to do everything necessary to maintain that alliance".
The oil-rich GCC states are key backers of resource-poor Jordan, which depends heavily on external aid. Before becoming royal court chief in 2007, he was head of the king's cabinet.
