India records 1-lakh cases, biggest single-day spike since pandemic began

The death toll climbed to 1,64,623 on Sunday with 513 new fatalities, the ministry data updated at 8 am showed.

The previous high was achieved on September 16 past year, when 97,894 positive cases were reported. This is the biggest daily rise in cases since September 19, when 93,337 fresh infections were recorded. In view of the increasing cases of Corona, the Government of Jammu and Kashmir has made a decision to close all the schools up to class 9 for two weeks and classes from 10th to 12th for two weeks.

With 103,558 new infections, India has now reported 12.6 million cases, the highest after the USA and Brazil, data from the health ministry showed.

Maharashtra: 30,10,597 total cases, 55,878 deaths, 25,22,823 recoveries.

The 1-lakh mark was breached on the day Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a review meeting and directed senior officials to send teams comprising public health experts and clinicians to Maharashtra, Punjab and Chhattisgarh, which have emerged as the worst-hit in terms of mortality over the last two weeks.

Furthermore, 60,048 people were discharged after recovery on Saturday, taking the nationwide recovery tally to 1,16,29,289.

India has recorded 93,246 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday (April 4).

Meanwhile, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, a total of 7,59,79,651 people have been vaccinated across the country till now.

"Our figures are being reconciled with the Indian Council of Medical Research", the ministry said on its website, adding that state-wise distribution of figures is subject to further verification and reconciliation. While Arunachal Pradesh stood the lowest in the tally with just 8 active cases, followed by Lakshadweep (36), Mizoram (41), Sikkim (51) and Andaman and Nicobar (57).

Similarly, Chhattisgarh has contributed 4.3 per cent of total cases in the country over the last 14 days. In Maharashtra, the total number of new cases per day has touched 47,913 which is more than double its earlier peak.

On ensuring saturation coverage of vaccination in surge districts, the Prime Minister suggested that a daily analysis of performance should be shared with states and Union Territories for corrective action.
