A tow truck tows away the vehicle used to ram a police barricade outside the U.S. Capitol building on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S. April 2, 2021. At least one officer, drew their weapon and shot the suspect. Both Capitol Police officers were taken to the hospital, with one having "succumbed to his injuries", Capitol Police Acting Chief Yogananda Pittman told reporters.

Capitol Police confirmed the identity of one of the two police officers, who died from his injuries after the attack, as 18-year veteran William Evans.

The suspect was shot dead by one of the officers after he "exited the auto with a knife in hand" and "lunged" at the officers, acting Capitol Police Chief Yogananda Pittman said at a press conference following the incident, as Insider previously reported. He began his USCP service on March 7, 2003, and was a member of the Capitol Division's First Responder's Unit. "USCP is working to notify the officer's next of kin before it releases additional information", police said in the statement. No motive is known at this time.

Five people died in the January 6 riot, including Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick, who was among a badly outnumbered force trying to fight off insurrectionists who supported former President Donald Trump's bid to overturn the election.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi ordered flags lowered to half-staff on the Capitol, calling Evans "a martyr for our democracy".

Metropolitan Police Chief Robert Contee said in the press conference that the attack does not appear to be terrorism-related, but the investigation is ongoing and investigators will continue to see if there are any links to terrorism. "Our hearts go out to his family and loved ones". "I am hopeful that the other officer who was injured will make a full recovery and be reunited with their family as soon as possible".

The attack comes as the Washington region remains on edge almost three months after a mob of armed insurrectionists stormed the Capitol as Congress was voting to certify Joe Biden's presidential win.

Following the January attack, fencing was erected around the Capitol complex and thousands of National Guard troops were sent to Washington.

The barricade where the incident occurred is a checkpoint on the Senate side of the Capitol. Nobody wants it there. "In the meantime, maybe that fence can prevent some of these things from happening".

There were fewer people than normal at the Capitol on Friday as Congress is in recess; most lawmakers are in their home states.
