The Capitol Building was placed on lockdown Friday after a knife-wielding suspect who has since died in the hospital - identified as 25-year-old Noah Green - rammed his vehicle into the North barricade, killing Evans and injuring another Capitol officer. Authorities installed a tall perimeter fence around the Capitol and for months restricted traffic along the roads closest to the building, but they have begun pulling back some of the emergency measures in recent weeks. "So I ask that you keep our US Capitol Police family in your thoughts and prayers", Pittman said. "All three have been transported to the hospital".

"We know what a hard time this has been for the Capitol, everyone who works there, and those who protect it", he said. Officials said there was no ongoing threat.

The attack comes as the Washington region remains on edge almost three months after a mob of armed insurrectionists stormed the Capitol as Congress was voting to certify Joe Biden's presidential win.

Friday's mayhem came less than three months after a mob of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol in a bloody attempt to stop Congress from certifying President Biden's election victory.

There are just less than 2,200 U.S. National Guard troops providing additional security at the U.S. Capitol Complex since that riot, which left one U.S. Capitol Police officer dead and many others injured.

Police said the incident happened at a checkpoint near the Capitol building, typically used by senators and staff on weekdays. The network also said that Green identified himself as a member of the Nation of Islam in a Facebook post.

A photo taken by an Associated Press photographer showed officers surrounding a vehicle that appeared to have crashed into a barricade on the Capitol's north side.

Top officials expressed shock over the attack and sympathy for Evans, an 18-year veteran of the force.

But permanent barriers remain in place on all the roadway entrances to the Capitol, well-manned by police and national guard.
