United Kingdom regulator says AstraZeneca jab safe after seven clot deaths

Australia investigates possible link of blood clot case to vaccine The Netherlands suspends use of AstraZeneca vaccine for under-60s

British regulators on Thursday said they have identified 30 cases of rare blood clot events after the use of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, 25 more than the agency previously reported.

The health agency, which reported this risk a week ago, "reconfirms the very rare occurrence of this thrombotic risk" in people vaccinated with the AstraZeneca vaccine.

There were eight other cases involving other types of thrombosis and low levels of blood platelets, which help blood to clot.

Australia has been highly successful in curbing the virus with snap lockdowns, border closures and swift tracking, reporting just under 29,300 infections and 909 deaths.

The complaint was filed "against X" - not targeting any individual or entity at this stage - a practice allowed in France when the circumstances of a case are still unclear, with the aim of "obtaining an investigation", the family's lawyer Etienne Boittin told French news agency AFP on Friday.

It said it wasn't clear if the shots are causing the clots, and that its "rigorous review into the United Kingdom reports of rare and specific types of blood clots is ongoing". He has been hospitalised in Melbourne.

It is still unknown if the clots are a side effect of the vaccine or merely a coincidence but the MHRA stress the benefits continue to outweigh any risk.

Yesterday, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the Drug Control Authority (DCA) had agreed to approve the conditional registration of the Covid-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca Solution for Injection, to be supplied through the Covax facility by South Korean manufacturer SK Bioscience Co Ltd, for use during an emergency. Both agencies are continuing to investigate. And it is difficult to know how common the cases are in the general population, given that it can be hard to diagnose.

David Werring, a professor at University College London's Institute of Neurology, said that the unusual presentation of the cases in vaccinated people was creating concern about possible links with the shot. "One died and one also had a brain haemorrhage", it said. He added that doctors and people who had received the AstraZeneca vaccine should be on the lookout for symptoms of the clotting events, like severe headaches or signs of a stroke.
