The U.S. Capitol complex was placed on lockdown for a time after Friday's shooting, and staffers were told they could not enter or exit buildings.

A US Capitol police officer was killed and a second injured on Friday after a vehicle rammed through security and crashed into a barrier at the Washington complex, forcing it into lockdown less than three months after a mob assault on Congress.

The Capitol Building was placed on lockdown Friday after a knife-wielding suspect who has since died in the hospital - identified as 25-year-old Noah Green - rammed his vehicle into the North barricade, killing Evans and injuring another Capitol officer.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi released a statement Friday evening praising Evans and the Capitol Police.

"Police are going to act with the phrase that we've become so used to with "an abundance of caution", to make sure that the threat is over for the time being, and that they are fully in control of the situation at the Capitol Hill complex before they make any further statement", Fisher said. She also said there was no ongoing threat and the suspect didn't yell anything before being shot. She said that, while an investigation into motive was ongoing, it did not appear to be "terrorism-related."With the motive still a mystery, the only insight into what could have possibly led to such an attack was found in a series of social media posts the 25-year-old made in the weeks leading up to the incident".

Some of Green's online postings in March suggested a level of despair and paranoia. One of the officers later died at a hospital.

Green is a Nation of Islam follower, according to MSNBC, citing Facebook content that was thought to be posted by him.

Top officials expressed shock over the attack and sympathy for Evans, an 18-year veteran of the force.

"It is with a very, very heart that I announce one of our officers had succumbed to his injuries", Pittman said.

No information was available on the identity of the attacker or his motivation, but Washington Metropolitan Police Chief Robert Contee indicated that a terror link was not suspected at this stage.

Capitol Police said that someone rammed a vehicle into two of its officers.

But Congress is now in recess, meaning the majority of politicians are not at the Capitol complex today.

Others did as well following reports that police officers were injured. Fencing that prevented vehicular traffic near that area was recently removed as the Capitol has started to open up after the January 6 riots.
