Australia investigates possible link of blood clot case to vaccine

Professor Kidd said he wanted to reassure Australians the risk of contracting COVID-19 was "far greater" than contracting the "very small potential risk" of a rare blood clotting disorder as a side effect.

The man received his vaccine dose on March 22.

Vials of AstraZeneca's Covishield vaccine for Covid-19 are seen at a filling lab at the Serum Institute of India, Pune.

European and United Kingdom medical regulators are yet to establish a causal link with rare instances of blood clotting disorders and the AstraZeneca jab.

On Tuesday, an independent vaccine expert panel in Germany said AstraZeneca shots should not routinely be given to people under 60 because of a rise in reported cases of unusual blood clots in the days after vaccination.

Kidd said people who received either of the Covid-19 vaccines should be aware of the common side effects, which include fever, sore muscles, tiredness and headaches usually 24 hours after the dose. That followed reports of 31 cases of the rare clots, mostly in women.

Lareb said the events had occurred 7 to 10 days after vaccination.

It previously declared the AstraZeneca vaccine safe, just as the World Health Organization did.

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation and the TGA have been closely monitoring reports overseas of blood clotting within four to 20 days of receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine, Prof Kidd says, including the condition known as "central venous sinus thrombosis".

Emer Cooke, executive director of the European Medicines Agency, said Wednesday that her Amsterdam-based agency continues to study reports of new cases as they come in and will provide a further assessment next week.

"That's still up in the air", said Fauci when asked whether the US will use the AstraZeneca vaccine doses.

Australia is investigating whether a blood clotting case recorded on Friday is related to the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine, a health official said, raising concern in a nation where most people are expected to receive the drugmaker's shot.

In early March, the Government announced it had secured an extra 8.5 million doses of Pfizer's Covid vaccine, bringing the total number of doses to 10m - enough for every New Zealander.
