The surge comes the same week Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry imposed a three-week "circuit breaker" on some activities to stop an "exponential growth" in infections.

The new numbers mean the province has now recorded more than 100,000 cases of the novel coronavirus for the first time since the pandemic began, with a total of 100,048 so far, including 1,458 people who have lost their lives to the disease. The current average of 8.29 new cases per day is up from a low of just under seven new cases per day last week and down from a recent high of 71 cases per day in early January.

The Jackson County Health Department has reported 747 cases of COVID-19 since March 18, most of those cases coming from people living in the city and its surrounding townships.

Laramie County has the highest confirmed active case count in the state with 71 confirmed active cases, according to the WDH.

Across the province, another 871 COVID-19 cases were diagnosed overnight, with 13,739 tests completed for a positivity rate of 6.3 per cent.

The pair urge everyone to be cautious ahead of the upcoming long weekend.

China has finally announced plans to inoculate COVID-19 vaccine to its senior citizens aged 60 and above but they would be provided only one jab without a booster as it is not recommended for now, a media report said on Tuesday.

"The risk for all of us is too great, which means any of our usual travel and holiday weekend gatherings need to be put on hold this year", said Henry and Dix in a joint statement.

Of the active cases, 301 individuals are now hospitalized with COVID-19, 80 of whom are in intensive care. A total of 91,066 people who tested positive have recovered.

Due to a delay in the sequencing analysis for variants of concern, the latest data is not available.

Health officials have now administered 756,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines in B.C., including 87,351 secondary doses.

Because of safety considerations for those under 55, B.C.is now waiting on Health Canada's recommendation before resuming vaccination of front-line workers who were to receive the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine, according to Henry and Dix.

Some 634,997 doses of vaccine have been given out as of March 30.
