Few official details of the violence in the city south of Los Angeles were immediately available, but the Los Angeles City News Service (CNS) and television station KNBC-TV reported that in addition to the four dead, two people were wounded by gunfire.

At least four people, including a child, have been shot and killed, and one person injured following an exchange of fire at an office building in the U.S. state of California, police said. "An officer-involved shooting occurred", the Orange Police Department said in a post to their Facebook page.

"Tonight around 5:30 pm officers arrived to a call of shots fired at the area of 202 W. Lincoln", Amat said during a news conference, adding that officers encountered gunshots at the scene.

The shooter was taken to a hospital in an unknown condition, Amat said, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The shooting took place less than 6 miles from Disneyland, which is in neighboring Anaheim.

The shooting was on the second floor of the building, Amat said. The shooting killed several people, including a child, and injured another person before police shot the suspect, police said.

"Horrifying and heartbreaking", he said. In Atlanta on March 16, a gunman shot and killed eight people, six of them women of Asian descent, at three spas.

The killings were the latest mass shooting in the United States in the last two weeks.

"Our hearts are with the families impacted by this bad tragedy tonight", he wrote. Ten people were killed on 22 March when a man opened fire at a supermarket in Boulder, Colorado.

This is a developing story.
