He denied that he ever had a relationship with any underage girls and said the allegations against him were "as searing as they are false".

Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz is under Justice Department investigation over a possible sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl, The New York Times reported Tuesday evening.

Gaetz confirmed he and his family have been cooperating with authorities for months.

The DOJ is investigating Gaetz for potential violations of federal sex trafficking laws.

Gaetz says the story came from "organized criminal extortion involving a former DOJ official". Under US law, it is illegal to entice a minor to cross state lines to engage in sexual acts in exchange for money or anything of value, and it leads to severe sentences.

The investigation is part of a larger inquiry into former Seminole County tax collector and friend Joel Greenberg, who was charged past year with 14 felony counts accusing him of stalking a political opponent, using a state database to create fake IDs, and sex trafficking a minor between the ages of 14 and 17, reports the Times.

Gaetz told The Times that his attorneys have contacted the Justice Department and assured them that he isn't a target of an investigation. He said McGee dangled a pardon in front of him to make the DOJ investigation go away."I know that there was a demand for money in exchange for a commitment that he could make this investigation go away, along with his co-conspirators", Gaetz declared. "I think someone is trying to make that look criminal when it is not", Gaetz is quoted in the report speaking about what he thinks the charges could relate to. "I have a suspicion that someone is trying to recategorize my generosity to ex-girlfriends as something more untoward".

"I have definitely, in my single days, provided for women I've dated", he told Axios. You know, I've paid for flights, for hotel rooms. "You were accused of something you did not do, so you know what this feels like."A somewhat befuddled Carlson responded: "You just referred to a mentally ill viewer who accused me of a sex crime 20 years ago". Gaetz asserted that his family had been cooperating with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and that his father had even worn a wire.

Axios suggested earlier Tuesday that Gaetz may be on the verge of considering a new career in conservative media. As for Carlson's question about how long the DOJ investigation into him has been going on, Gaetz wouldn't answer and instead pivoted to the supposed extortion plot, which he said began on March 16."The FBI and the Department of Justice must release the tapes that are in their possession that were done at their direction", Gaetz said at the conclusion of the freakish interview.

Elected in 2016, Gaetz rose to national prominence in recent years as one of Trump's most vocal defenders.
