Suez Canal: Sisi orders preparations to lighten stranded ship's load

Race To Free Giant Ship From Suez Canal Continues Two more tugboats join bid to free cargo ship stuck in Suez Canal

The canal was completely blocked after a giant ship called the Ever Given ran aground on Tuesday.

The Italian-flagged Carlo Magno and the Dutch-flagged Alp Guard were in the Red Sea en route to join over ten other tugboats deployed in the Suez Canal, the ship-tracking websites said.

An investigation would be needed to determine whether technical or human errors occurred, the authority added.

A crane that could be used to remove containers from the ship's bow, should that plan fail, has also not yet arrived, according to Boskalis.

The German radio, NDR, said that ongoing European discussions at the level of the European Union are demanding that EVER GIVEN ship should be prevented from passing through any port in Europe due to its repeated technical problems that affect worldwide navigation and the failure of its captain to control it.

Aerial photos of the Suez Canal show just how bad the traffic jam of ships has become in recent days.

German shipping line Hapag Lloyd (DXE: HLAG) said it has nine vessels locked in the canal or at outside anchorage and six more being redirected around the Cape of Good Hope. Speaking on Sunday to the pro-government Egyptian television channel Extra News, Rabei said Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi had ordered the canal authority to prepare for all options, including taking containers off of the vessel.

"We are consulting with our Egyptian partners about how we can best support their efforts", she said. As a window for a breakthrough narrows with high tide receding this week, fears have grown that authorities would be forced to lighten the vessel by removing the ship's 20,000 containers - a complex operation, requiring specialized equipment not found in Egypt, that could take days or weeks.

The canal, which connects the Red Sea to the Mediterranean Sea, will experience a high tide then.

A prolonged closure of the crucial waterway would cause delays in the global shipment chain.

About 15 percent of world shipping traffic transits the Suez Canal, which is a key source of foreign currency revenue for Egypt.

Some 19,000 vessels passed through the canal previous year, according to official figures.

It followed a new attempt to dislodge the ship involving 10 tug boats, according to the Suez Canal Authority. The closure could affect oil and gas shipments heading north to Europe and elsewhere from the Middle East. Syria has begun rationing fuel amid concerns of delays of shipments.

More than 320 ships are stalled at either end, Rabie said.

Some maritime firms have made a decision to divert ships through the Cape of Good Hope, around the African continent.

The push to free the container ship stuck in the Suez Canal continued into a fifth day Saturday as more than 300 ships on either side wait to pass through the blockage. It turned back two other ships and said it expected "some missed sailings as a result of this incident".

"MSC expects this incident to have a very significant impact on the movement of containerized goods, disrupting supply chains beyond the existing challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic", it said.
