Birx, who had served as the Trump White House's coronavirus response coordinator, said the phone call followed her appearance on CNN in August.

At the beginning of the pandemic, shortly after he said Phase I vaccine trials wouldn't begin for "three months", Fauci claimed that "the fastest a vaccine could be ready for use on an emergency basis was one year, although the process could take up to two years". Social media pointed out that Fauci appeared willing to take much of the credit completely avoided mentioning former President Trump's Operation Warp Speed.

"The one policy directive he gave to me in April, which was the last time I really had any briefing with him in that kind of way, was we will never shut the country down again", she told Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN's chief medical correspondent.

"It was a CNN report in August that got awful pushback", Birx said in the clip published Sunday by CNN. "It was very uncomfortable, very direct, and very hard to hear".

Birx described the exchange in a preview of the coming documentary about the pandemic titled "COVID WAR: The Pandemic Doctors Speak Out", which is scheduled to air Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on CNN. In the interview, Birx said the pandemic in August differed from a surge earlier in the year because the virus had infiltrated rural communities. Gupta then asked Birx if she was "threatened", to which she replied only that "it was a very uncomfortable conversation". "It is extraordinarily widespread".

On Sunday, March 28, Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, made the comment while in an interview with CNN for a special segment, diving into the details of America's pandemic response.

NYT further reported that several of the officials, including Dr. Anthony S. Fauci - who unlike the others is a career scientist and is now advising President Joe Biden - blamed China, where the virus was first detected, for not being open enough with the United States.

In an interview with The New York Times published in January, Fauci said Trump would sometimes call him after he gave an interview and ask why he hadn't given a more "positive" outlook on the pandemic. "All the rest of them, in my mind, could have been mitigated or decreased substantially".

More than 542,000 people have died from Covid-19 in the United States, according to a Reuters tally, and nearly 30 million have been infected. The US reached 100,000 COVID-19 deaths by the end of May 2020.
