On Tuesday, Biden spoke at the White House and called for a ban on what he called "assault-style weapons" and high-capacity magazines. Some Republicans say preventing criminals from gaining access to firearms is the solution.

John Feinblatt, the president of Everytown for Gun Safety, the gun control group backed by Bloomberg, said Tuesday that the politics of gun control had "completely changed" since the Sandy Hook shooting.

"OK, I'll take that deal", Colbert said.

Led by Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the Republican minority also called four witnesses: Amy Swearer, a legal fellow at the Heritage Foundation; Geneva Solomon, a California gun shop owner; Suzanna Gratia Hupp, a former Texas legislator; and Chris Cheng, the History Channel's Top Shot Season 4 Champion.

The House this month passed two measures on almost party-line votes created to improve and bolster background checks.

Still, Democrats aren't united on the legislation.

"I don't support what the House passed, not at all", he said, adding that he remains open to tighter background checks of commercial gun sales. He said Schumer should bring up legislation and then have a "full, robust discussion".

Democrats said Tuesday that they are pushing toward a vote on expanded gun control measures as the nation reels from its second mass shooting in a week. "Many of my Democratic colleagues filibustered it". Democrats also are pressing ahead with other legislation that faces Republican opposition, including voting-rights legislation. But Reinfeld said she hopes Democratic state leaders will push for a similar ban statewide.

"We have a lot of drug addicts who overdose. Often times people can legitimately buy a firearm because there's nothing in their background that says that they shouldn't". The gunman purchased the weapon on the Internet without a background check.

"We've seen the states take action because the federal government has failed to do so", said Laura Cutilletta, the managing director of the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

Republicans by and large remain staunchly opposed to new gun regulations, arguing that the Second Amendment is sacrosanct and should not be infringed by virtually any legislation.

"It's much more a mental health issue than a firearm issue because you can use nearly anything as a destructive device", he said. "Let's regulate guns the way we regulate alcohol and cars".

Colorado State Shooting Association, for its part, said any new renewed debate on gun laws after Monday's slayings should come after allowing time for grief and healing, according to a statement where they called the shooting a "horrible event".

"Bill after bill demonizes the responsible gun owner", she said.

Kennedy claimed that the USA does not need more gun control, but more "idiot control", recalling attempts to "strengthen national database" to prevent people with criminal records and mental disorders from owing weapons.

"I'm not the curator of the order, but I'm telling you that without a background checks bill, none of the others bills will be as effective as they could be", Feinblatt said.
