At least 10 people, including one police officer, were killed in a shooting at a supermarket in the USA state of Colorado on Monday, Boulder Police Chief Maris Herold said.

Commander Kerry Yamaguchi of the Boulder Police Department said the person taken into custody was believed to be the only individual with injuries who survived the bloodshed.

Authorities responded to what they said was an active shooter at the King Soopers grocery store.

Police say the shooting has left 10 people dead, including a police officer.

The Boulder police tweeted some 20 minutes later that there was an "Active Shooter at the King Soopers on Table Mesa" street.

Colorado governor Jared Polis and Boulder Mayor Sam Weaver each referred to the incident as a "tragedy" in statements on Twitter. He says he heard multiple gunshots while he was inside. "Asking media to honor families' privacy", the Boulder Police Department tweeted. They said they were investigating to see whether it was connected to the supermarket shooting.

Before this incident, tragic mass shootings repeatedly occurred in the US western state.

"I also want to stress how incredibly sorry I am for all the victims who were killed in Kings Soopers", Mr Dougherty said.

"He was by all accounts one of the outstanding officers of the Boulder Police Department, and his life was cut too short", Dougherty said about Talley.

"I just almost got killed for getting a soda and a bag of chips", Ryan Borowski, who was in the store when he heard at least eight gunshots and escaped, told CNN. This post will be updated with new details as they come in.

"I knew we couldn't do anything for the guy", he said.

To escape, the 57-year-old ran to the loading dock where a number of people were taking care of older customers. Outside, Edwards said, arriving police pulled up next to a body in the parking lot.

President Joe Biden has been briefed about the shooting, the White House said. "They were communicating with my daughter through his phone, texting".

The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, Local 7, which represents 32 employees at the King Soopers outlet, expressed gratitude to emergency responders, customers and staffers who "acted swiftly to prevent even greater loss of life".

Live video from local TV stations showed a large police presence outside the supermarket and people were escorted out of the supermarket by police officers.

We will continue to cooperate with local law enforcement and our store will remain closed during the police investigation.
