Volcano Erupts in Iceland Near Capital Following Weeks of Seismic Activity

VOLCANO BREAKING Volcano news Fagradalsfjall in the Reykjanes peninsula Iceland began erupting at around 10pm GMT

It is the area's first volcanic eruption in almost 800 years.

The Department of Emergency Management said it was not anticipating evacuations because the volcano is in a remote valley, about 2.5 kilometres from the nearest road.

A volcano erupted just 40 kilometres (25 miles) from Iceland's capital Reykjavik on Friday, a red cloud lighting up the night sky as a no-fly zone was established in the area. Still, there was no certainty around timing: The eruption itself took scientists by surprise, the AP reported, as seismic activity had decreased slightly right before it.

But the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) said in a report on Saturday that the pollution was likely to have little effect on the health and well-being of the area's inhabitants.

"Everyone here is getting into their cars to drive up there", she said.

According to meteorologists, there have been registered thousands of small earthquakes in the Reykjanes Peninsula recently. "In line with well-rehearsed contingency plans, the aviation color code for the Reykjanes Peninsula has been elevated to red, signifying an eruption in progress", the IMO said in a statement on late Friday.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office shared both an image of the lava flow and a short video.

"I think we couldn't hope for anything better than that", IMO volcanic hazards coordinator Sara Barsotti told Reuters.

The vast island near the Arctic Circle straddles the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a crack on the ocean floor separating the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates.

A fissure 500 to 750 meters (547 to 820 yards) long opened at the eruption site, spewing lava fountains up to 100 meters (110 yards) high, Bjarki Friis of the meteorological office said.

The source of the eruption is a large body of molten rock, known as magma, which has pushed its way to the surface over the past weeks, instigating the earthquakes.
