Ottawa will enter the province's Red level of COVID-19 of COVID-19 preventive measures as of midnight Friday morning, Ontario announced Thursday.

The Ontario COVID-19 Science Advisory Table says more transmissible virus variants of concern account for nearly half of new cases and are driving growth.

With the exception of the 1,747 new infections that were confirmed on March 14, a tally that the province said was not an accurate due to a data cleanup, this is the highest case count reported since February 1, when 1,969 new infections were confirmed.

Ford said that about 91,000 people have received a dose of the COVID-19 vaccine at one of Ontario's drugstores.

Meanwhile, Quebec is reporting 561 new COVID-19 infections and eight more deaths attributed to the novel coronavirus.

"Thanks to the efforts of our health care partners and the efficiency of our booking system, Ontario has been able to schedule more appointments and vaccinate more people quickly and conveniently", said Minister Elliott.

Several public health units across Ontario are using their own booking systems, so residents are being directed to consult with their individual public health units if they have questions about which system is in place where they live.

Information on the Sudbury Catholic District School Board's website indicates the previous cases at Pius XII, Marymount Academy and St. Benedict have all recovered.

If the province had a more stable supply of vaccines, pharmacies could play a bigger role in inoculation efforts, Ontario said in a news release.

Health officials say the National Microbiology Lab has also confirmed four new variant cases from previously identified cases - two more of the B.1.1.7 variant, first detected in the United Kingdom; and two more of the B.1.351 variant, first identified in South Africa. This would bring the total number of pharmacies participating in the vaccine rollout to 700.

Testing done for a COVID-19 mutation turned up 704 cases Friday, evidence of VOC spread.

This week, the NACI revised the recommendations after reviewing three real-world studies that showed the AstraZeneca vaccine was safe and effective in older populations.
