As the storm pulls away later Sunday and Sunday night, winds from the northwest are expected to increase and may lead to more widespread blowing and drifting snow in Colorado.

By Sunday morning, the heavy rain will spread across much of the plains, while Denver and Cheyenne, Wyoming, will remain in heavy snow. In Cheyenne and throughout southeastern Wyoming, the National Weather Service forecast "difficult to impossible travel conditions" with "snow-packed roadways and whiteout conditions". At times near white-out conditions will be possible, and winds could gust as high as 35 miles per hour.

Along I-25, The National Weather Service in Boulder reported that roads were getting "slushy".

The National Weather Service is forecasting that the heaviest snowfall will occur near the Iowa border in the southwestern corner of the state. "Airlines are de-icing, so if you're flying out this afternoon, expect to de-ice before take off", the Denver International Airport tweeted on Saturday.

The National Meteorological Service warned that the storm will prevent the movement of the population on Sunday and part of Monday.

In addition to the snow and blizzard-like conditions, isolated severe storms and heavy rains will threaten parts of Kansas into the Mid and Lower Mississippi Valley. An avalanche watch was also posted for the Front Range mountains in Colorado. "Return travel from the mountains into #Denver will be extremely challenging Sunday".

Officials in Denver, Colorado, have canceled thousands of flights over the weekend due to a severe winter storm.

On Saturday evening, as the sun set, officials began shutting stretches of major interstates.

"Slow to ramp up Saturday, storm makes itself known on Sunday", the state Transportation Department tweeted Sunday afternoon. Interstate 80, which runs east-west across Wyoming, was also closed.

The highways most likely to be affected included Interstate 25 from Colorado Springs to Wyoming, including Denver and Monument Hill; I-70 to Limon; and I-76 to Ft.

"Avoid any unnecessary travel!"

Weather alerts have been issued from Nevada to Kentucky for this major storm.

"Historic and crippling winter storms will significantly impact all of southeast Wyoming and the western Nebraska panhandle", it reported.

Cheyenne recorded eight straight hours of gusts topping 40 mph amid the heavy snow midday Sunday, meeting the criteria for a blizzard. "So whatever falls Sunday night into Monday will melt early next week". Severe weather, including the possibility of strong tornadoes across the central and southern plains, is also expected.

By 8 p.m. MST on Saturday, the snow was already starting to pile up. In Amarillo, dozens of hikers were evacuated from a trail after two possible tornadoes in the area.
