The Philippine government declared the discovery of a new coronavirus strain in the country, the Department of Health (DOH) reported on Saturday, as cited by media. Both P.1 and the new P.3 variants have mutations in the spike protein, including E484K and N501Y mutations. COVID-19 vaccines are also thought to be less effective against some variants, including the Brazilian one.

The Japan Ministry of Health last Friday said it detected a new coronavirus variant in a traveler from the Philippines.

A Filipino returning from Brazil tested positive for the P.1 Brazil variant after 752 samples were sequenced at the genome centre, the health ministry said in a statement.

"It is even more important than ever that we all continue to consistently take steps that prevent the spread of the virus".

This is the first time the variant has been detected in Japan.

Health officials in northern Nevada have confirmed the region's first case of a Covid-19 variant that originated in the United Kingdom.

"Of the additional 59 B.1.1.7 variant cases, 30 are local cases, 18 are ROFs, and 11 are now being verified if they are local or ROF cases", the DOH said. "According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there is evidence to suggest that transmissibility and the ability of antibodies generated through previous infection is affected by some mutations of this variant", it added.

"The appearance of these variants should not discourage us - they should invigorate and motivate us to turn the tide on the pandemic". The variant, which was first found in Manaus, Brazil, appears to be more contagious than other COVID-19 strains.

The variants are mutant versions of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19, which has already killed more than 2.7 million people in the pandemic.
