The officer was arrested Tuesday, the Metropolitan Police said.

British police holding a fellow officer on suspicion of kidnap and murder said on Friday a body discovered in woodland was that of a missing woman at the centre of a high-profile case that has stoked national anger in the UK. "Killed women are common", she added.

A vigil for Sarah Everard in south London has been cancelled and organisers said details of a "virtual gathering" will be announced instead.

Discussing what needs to be done to help end violence against women, Ribeiro-Addy says we need to "get to the roots of why this is happening".

Vigils are being planned in Ms Everard's name.

Many women have questioned why the onus should be on them, and suggested that men could appear less intimidating if they cross the road or back off if they are walking behind a woman late at night.

She was seen on security footage wearing a bright-green raincoat, blue and white patterned trousers, and a white beanie.

The case has sparked widespread anger in the United Kingdom, and on Thursday MP Jess Phillips read out the names in parliament of 118 women and girls killed in Britain in the previous year.

The officer in his 40s, a member of the force's Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Command, is being held on suspicion of kidnapping and murder but has not yet been charged.

Many women have shared their stories in the wake of Ms Everard's death.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IPOC) this week was commissioned to investigate whether Met officers responded appropriately to the indecent exposure, which is alleged to have occurred just days before Ms Everard went missing.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "The suspect was taken to a hospital for treatment to a head injury sustained while in custody in a cell on Friday, 12 March".

"No woman in London should be unsafe on London's streets and I understand the strength of feeling that has grown following Sarah's disappearance".

Commissioner Dick sought to reassure women, saying it was "incredibly rare" for a woman to be abducted from the streets.

"But I completely understand that despite this, women in London and the wider public, particularly those in the area where Sarah went missing, will be anxious and may well be feeling scared", she said.

Ms Everard's body, found inside a builder's bag in Kent, was identified through the use of dental records, the court also heard.

They said: "Sarah was bright and attractive - a wonderful daughter and sister". She was kind and thoughtful, caring and dependable.
